At the Ralph Lauren show today, the luxury was resplendent. Literally, the girls were wrapped in shimmery satins and silks, the coziest of crushed velvets and thick hugs of cashmere. The sumptuous notes were accented by diamonds everywhere—the models looked like some fairy godmother had turned every normal detail—buttons on blazers, heels on sandals, straps on shoes—into strings of sparkly diamonds. Of course there were no real carats on the clothes but the white lights made the sparklers APPEAR real and that was the point. In a day and age when some magazines will tell you how to squeeze the last half inch of toothpaste out of the tube, it's lovely to have an escape from the frugality and frightening headlines.

Whatever your escape (mine is swimming in the luxury of a 50-meter pool in the morning before work), take the visual vacations you need. It may be looking at your favorite magazine or catalog or TV show (my daughter loves Privileged, and in fact one of the young stars, Lucy Hale, is in the February issue of SELF, in our spring beauty trends preview), or it's a chance to get outside, preferably to a place with blue skies and warm temperatures. Take a chance to relax and enjoy the little luxuries of life. Last night I went out to dinner with my hubby and two other couples and we were all laughing so hard at one point I had tears of giggles in my eyes. It felt so good. Sometimes you feel guilty even smiling since other people are feeling low right now. But smiling is the ultimate luxury and laughing is so good for our spirits and our souls and we need to see the brilliance of life in every detail.

If a pink carnation was the only flower Don McLean’s “lonely teenage broncing buck” had in “Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie,” there was a good reason he was out of luck. The pompom-like flowers made up almost every corsage I ever got in high school, and their clammy blossoms were about as appealing as their straight-from-the-refrigerator temperature. Still, each time I received a carnation, I’d stick my nose into it, hoping for a scent. Each time the petals disappointed.

If you’ve been seeing someone older in the mirror lately you’ve probably wondered what it would be like to have some sort of cosmetic procedure in order to look younger. You may even believe without a doubt that by looking younger you will magically begin to feel younger. This is often how the quest for the perfect skin care products begins. But, can they really stack up to the results of surgical procedures for the younger looking skin? Sometimes.

Here are a few things to consider when it comes to skin care products that your average surgical procedure can’t touch.

    1)    Location. Skin care products can be used in places where surgery may be difficult. The hands are often the one place that shows signs of age more than most other parts of the body—even the eyes. While there are cosmetic surgery options to repair damage to the hands such as burns, injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome, there aren’t many options available to using surgery to remove the signs of aging from your hands. There are skin care products that can accomplish this.

    2)    Price. While most people can afford effective skin care products, the average family would struggle in order to pay for the costs of cosmetic procedures and the recovery time and treatment that is often required to go along with the costs of the actual procedure. Money is important in these troubled economic times more so than every before. Keep the costs in mind first and foremost when considering cosmetic surgery as an option for your anti aging needs.

    3)    Time. Time is money. Not only do cosmetic procedures carry a hefty up front price tag but they also require a rather large amount of time off work to recover from the procedure.

    4)    Risk. The risks expand exponentially between the risk of using skin care products that may or may not work and the risks involved in cosmetic procedures that may result in countless infections, scarring, deformation, and/or death.

    5)    Convenience. It is infinitely more convenient to use skin care products once or twice a day in the privacy of your bathroom than it is to schedule appointments, treatments, and/or surgeries and try to fit them into your busy life.

    6)    Privacy. There is nothing quite like everyone noticing that you’ve had “work” done and speculating about the reasons. The results from most skin care products you use at home are gradual rather than sudden and leave a lot less room for wagging tongues and office gossip.

Surgical procedures have become far more common in recent years. We are now experiencing a down turn in economic times and it is time to consider options that are better for budgets. Fortunately, there are plenty of skin care products that deliver impressive results that are in league with the results of many cosmetic procedures without the high cosmetic price tag. Which choice is better for you?

You’ve probably heard all kinds of wild claims about how this or that ingredient in skin care products is the miracle solution that all women have been looking for. There is one product though, that has solid evidence to support its claims to be an excellent topical agent to include in skin care products. What is this miracle of modern science? Your grandma would be pleased to know that it is none other than vitamin C.

Now that we know how effective vitamin C is for fighting off the signs of aging it should be a simple solution to include this wonder ingredient in all forms of skin care products. Right? Not exactly. The problem is that while we know how effective vitamin C is, it is also somewhat unstable to use as an ingredient in skin care products because it oxidizes too quickly—which can lead to the formation of free radicals.

You will find a few skin care products that have mastered a method for slowing the oxidation rate. Unfortunately, the procedure, when able to harness enough vitamin C to be effective is costly, and those costs are passed on to you. In other words, skin care products that contain enough vitamin C to be effective without running the risk of damaging the skin are expensive.

Your choices, as of now, remain paying out a small fortune for skin care products that contain the elusive but highly effective vitamin C, purchasing products that contain close relatives of the C vitamin that are extremely effective just not as much so as the full strength version of the actual vitamin, or using products that contain vitamin C derivatives. These derivatives are less expensive than the real thing but quite effective in their own right and growing right along with the technology. The key to the derivatives over the close relatives of vitamin C is that the derivatives are actually able to boost collagen production. These products continue to be quite rare in the skin care products line, you should see an increase in availability in the near future.

At the end of the day, vitamin C as a primary ingredient in topical skin care products is believed by many to be the equivalent of taking a sip from the Fountain of Youth. Since that remains a difficult task  for those who do not have the budget to enjoy these amazing products, derivatives of vitamin C are becoming increasingly viable options. You also have the options of enjoying more vitamin C rich foods in your  diet to boost the healing power, even to the skin, of vitamin C when it works from the inside to the outside. The results can be impressive though not as immediate or quite as effective as topical skin care products that contain vitamin C. Try finding skin care products that contain vitamin C and eating more foods that are rich in vitamin C to see what a difference it can make for you.

Did you know that taking as few as five minutes a day for the sake of skin care can make a huge impact on how youthful and beautiful your skin looks? It can and it does. If you can take more, that is even better but far too few women spend more than a few seconds washing their faces with soap and water each day—which can do much more harm than good in the long run. You can even make your own skin care products so that enjoying excellent skin care daily doesn’t have to become a financial hardship.

Despite common misconceptions, you do not need to spend a fortune on your skin in order to enjoy beautiful skin that has a healthy, youthful glow. Most makers of anti aging skin care products won’t clue you in to this little secret though. You can find effective products in all price ranges. It is even possible to make your own—though admittedly it will take far more than five minutes a day if you are going this route.

Taking five minutes out of your busy schedule help with your skin care needs in more ways than the obvious. The obvious being that by investing five minutes of your time into your skin care efforts you are actually spending time caring for your skin and that is a good thing as long as you are using products that will address your specific skin care needs.

The not so obvious benefit of taking five minutes for skin care each and every day is that you are, in essence, taking five minutes for yourself. Too many women spend too little time caring for ourselves. Pampering aside, we often do next to nothing to restore our mental clarity, affirm who we are as individuals, and be anything other than mommy, wife, sister, boss, worker, chef, dispute mediator, coworker moderator, crisis manager, and countless other titles we wear throughout the day. Five minutes seems like such a small price to ask and so many of us find that difficult to do.

The mental health benefits alone of taking five minutes for yourself and the care of your skin will work to improve your skin health. You see, stress, and the constant need to be “on” all the time, are leading contributors to the skin problems you are hoping to heal. These five minutes are not only your chance to fit in that much needed skin care but also to relax.  I know, it’s a foreign concept but the benefits are well worth five minutes worth of time.

You wear many hats as a women in the modern world. Taking five minutes for skin care each and every day allows you to remove all of those hats and simply be a woman—at least for five minutes. Start small and then, as the people in your life become accustomed to your five minute skin care breaks, work your way up to bigger breaks and even better skin health along the way.

    darphin_prescription.jpg
French skincare is notoriously wonderful, so I was very excited to be invited to try some products by Darphin. However, my temperamental skin doesn't like change, and I was slighly worried that too many new ingredients and products might do more harm than good. Luckily I wasn't going into this blind. As an aromatherapy-based brand, Darphin believe in touching, feeling and (of course) smelling the ingredients before buying. My skincare regime was custom-fit after a long consultation, and I was surprised at what I ended up taking home with me...

    pocket rocket urban decay.jpg
Urban Decay have done it again- released a quirky product that's aimed for cult status. What they've come up this time is a cross between stripper pens and a pheromone sorbet. In a fabulous reverse of sexism you can choose from eight lip glosses which all feature buff boys in various states of undress. Simply turn the gloss and the image reveals even more of their pumped torsos, allowing you a little ogle whilst you gloss up.
